19-goal striker Patrick Bamford worth the risk for Newcastle United

Ahead of next season, reports have linked Chelsea youngster Patrick Bamford with a loan move to Newcastle.

According to the Daily Mail, the powers that be at Newcastle United are keen to discuss a possible loan move for Chelsea youngster Patrick Bamford.

Having scored 19 goals in all competitions for Middlesbrough, Bamford has impressed during his season-long loan with the Championship club and will be keen to test his ability in the Premier League next term. However, it is unlikely that he will get the chance to with his parent side.

With Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Didier Drogba to compete with for first team football, as well as youngsters Dominic Solanke and Isaiah Brown, who have both been called up to the senior set-up in recent weeks, the Championship Player of the Season is unlikely to receive the recognition he deserves at Stamford Bridge.

Such is reality, that, despite Bamford's excellent form this season, he is likely to be overlooked by Mourinho and co. throughout the summer and beyond. However, his talent would be much appreciated at St James' Park, where, quite frankly, there have been few moments of excitement throughout the latter stage of the season.

Ayoze Perez has been Newcastle's regular front man this term, but the Spaniard has managed just six goals in his debut season. Papiss Cisse, meanwhile, the Toon's season top scorer with 11 strikes to his name, has been forced to serve a lengthy ban for on-field misdemeanours. Having converted 17% of his total chances this term, scoring on 17 occasions, Bamford could be the man to change Newcastle's fortunes.

The North East club's hopes of signing Bamford could well fall upon the results of the play-offs, and subsequently, to the fate of one of their closest rivals. For Chelsea, the ideal scenario would be for Middlesborough to be promoted come the end of May, due to Jose Mourinho's strong relationship with manager Aitor Karanka. If 'Plan A' should fail, Bamford has a nearby suitor waiting in the wings.
