Villa are currently 16th in the league table with 32 points from 34 matches, just two points above the bottom three.
Under manager Tim Sherwood, the Villans have been playing well and with confidence, and narrowly lost 3-2 to defending English champions Manchester City away from home at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.
Following that defeat, Sherwood was quoted as saying by Setanta: “You think we can get relegated playing like that? You are having a laugh aren’t you?”
Former Manchester United and Liverpool striker Owen finds those comments of the former Tottenham boss “amusing” and wrote on Colossusbets.com: “Tim Sherwood was quite amusing when asked whether he was worried about relegation after his side’s somewhat unfortunate 3-2 loss at the Etihad on Saturday…
“Unfortunately for Tim and Aston Villa fans, looking at the table, the answer is yes, they can go down, especially after Hull’s 1-0 defeat of Liverpool on Tuesday night.”
Former Newcastle United striker Owen added that he does not think that Villa will get relegated, but he highlighted the fact that the Villans have have lost three of their last six games.
While one can understand the optimism of Sherwood and the Villa fans, it must be remembered that at the end of the day, points matter - not performances.
Although Villa did give a good account of themselves against City, they lost and are still very much in danger of finishing in the bottom three.
