Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher claims Tottenham Hotspur have been ‘key’ in Chelsea’s Premier League campaign

Liverpool great Jamie Carragher reflects on Chelsea’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on New Year’s Day.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed in The Daily Mail that Tottenham Hotspur have had a big role to play in Chelsea’s successful Premier League campaign.

“In some ways, Tottenham have been the key team in Chelsea’s campaign,” the former England international defender wrote in The Daily Mail. “Something definitely changed after they lost 5-3 at White Hart Lane on January 1, a night that Manchester City drew level with them at the top of the table.

“Was that the night he felt 'the fear'? Chelsea had been open to that point but, since then, they have played 13 games and only conceded seven goals in the Premier League, getting back to defensive standards we expect of a Mourinho team.”

Carragher was referring to Chelsea’s humiliating 5-3 defeat to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur away from home at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day.

England international striker Harry Kane ran the Blues' defence ragged and could have even scored a hat-trick - he had to settle for a brace.

While that defeat did suggest that Chelsea are fallible, Jose Mourinho’s side bounced back in style and are now only three points away from clinching the Premier League title.

Chelsea have not played pleasing football since that game against Spurs, but they have got the job done and are now on the verge of a deserved championship success.

Winning that match may not eventually mean much for Tottenham, who are set to finish outside the top four of the Premier League once again, but it seems that losing that day made Chelsea more resilient and, in some ways, stronger.
