Liverpool fans react on Twitter to news Brad Jones will be offered a new contract in the summer

The Australian stopper is set to get a new deal at Anfield, which has received a mixed reaction.

It has been reported by the Liverpool Echo that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to tie down second choice goalkeeper Brad Jones to a new deal. The Australian, who joined the club from Middlesbrough in 2010 has only made 11 Premier League appearances in his five years at the club. He has been a back-up at the club throughout his time on Merseyside, but the 33-year-old was expected to be let go this summer.

Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet has come good in recent weeks, but had a very difficult stage in the season. At that point it looked clear that Liverpool would be bringing in a new stopper this summer.

Despite the resurgence of the Belgian international most Liverpool fans still wanted to see a new face battling for the gloves. Rui Patricio of Sporting Lisbon is one name who has been mentioned.

Liverpool fans are right to worry if Jones is still set to act back-up. He is a loyal servant, but certainly not of the calibre several other teams in the Premier League have. Victor Valdes at Manchester United, Will Caballero at Manchester City, Wojciech Szczesny at Arsenal and then there is Petr Cech at Chelsea.

Liverpool will hope this offer is for Jones to become third-choice stopper at a club where he is clearly happy and settled - so a new face can arrive who is actually capable of pushing Mignolet for a first-team spot.

Here is some of the best reaction from Twitter to the news...
