Arsenal hero Liam Brady has told reporters that he would hate to see midfielder Jack Wilshere leave the club amid speculation over his future, the Daily Star report.
The England international has barely featured this season after spending months attempting to get over a number of injury setbacks which have hampered his progress in North London.
Yet, even when he regains full fitness, question marks have been raised over his future owing to the strength in depth the Gunners possess in their midfield ranks.
Moreover, speculation in the British tabloids have linked the midfielder with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester City, as per the report by the Daily Star, with the Citizens in need of home-grown talent.
Brady, however, recognises the 23-year-old’s allegiance to the Gunners and told reporters that he would hate to see the player depart the Emirates this summer.
“I don’t know what is going through Arsene Wenger’s mind, I don’t know what is going through Jack Wilshere’s mind, but I think I know what is going through the people at Man City’s minds - they need English players and it is no surprise to see they might target Jack Wilshere,” he explained.
“But I would hate to see him leave the club because I have known the kid since he was ten years of age and he is Arsenal through and through.”
Wilshere has started just seven Premier League matches this term, with his last appearance coming in the 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United in late November.
The Gunners’ number 10 made his debut for the club in 2008 and has gone on to represent Wenger’s men 148 times in all competitions, winning the FA Cup in 2014.
