Former Aston Villa and Liverpool forward Stan Collymore made a prediction over the future of Everton defender John Stones during a session for Periscope TV.
Collymore admitted that he’s been impressed by the centre back and feels he’s destined for big things if he continues to progress in the right way.
“I really like John Stones, he’s been great – I can see him being captain of England in a couple of years,” said Collymore.
Stones was superb last weekend in the game against Manchester United, as he dominated in defence and got a goal to help the Toffees towards another three points.
His progress has been hampered over the course of this season because of injury, but he’s showing his obvious talent and has the skillset needed to be a top defender at Premier League and international level for several years.
The challenge for Stones is to make sure he keeps challenging himself to become a better player and to ensure that he stays fit.
If he refines his game season after season, he will eradicate the weaknesses and will become a hard player for any striker to get the better of.
The challenger for Everton manager Roberto Martinez is to protect and use him in the right way.
The Spaniard is superb in terms of knowing when to step in and protect players, but also developing them along the lines of how he likes his teams to play.
That means Stones should become a very comfortable player across the backline in terms of possession, while retaining all of his natural talent in terms of strength and that ability to win key duels.
