The Dutchman scored twice in a midweek under-21 match and is pushing for a return to Louis van Gaal’s starting line-up.
After Liverpool’s midweek defeat to Hull City, Manchester United’s place in the top four was all-but secured. They have a seven-point advantage over their rivals with just four games of the season remaining.
After a run of six consecutive wins, the Red Devils’ form has dipped recently with consecutive league losses for the first time under Van Gaal. The defeats to Chelsea and Everton also saw United fail to score.
It means they will be looking to bounce back this weekend at home to West Bromwich Albion, who are not quite safe from relegation just yet.
With Van Gaal confirming on Friday, per the MEN, that Michael Carrick remains out, Wayne Rooney could be forced to drop back into midfield, leaving the striking spot open for either Robin van Persie or Radamel Falcao to claim.
With Falcao failing to take any opportunity he has been given in the first-team this season, the most likely scenario is that the now recovered Van Persie is given a recall.
The Dutchman has featured in two under-21 matches, and in a cameo role at Goodison Park last week, but is yet to start a first-team game since picking up an injury in the defeat to Swansea City in February.
Van Persie showed that he is ready to return in midweek as he scored twice in the under-21 side's comfortable victory over their Fulham counterparts.
However, he has failed to convince many with his performances this season. Van Persie has struggled for form and has looked past his best on several occasions. The Dutchman was once one of the most feared strikers in the Premier League, but is now under pressure to remain at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
It is now time for Van Persie to step up to the plate on his return and show the form that saw him almost single-handedly fire United to their 20th league title just two years ago in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge.
