PSV sporting director confirms Liverpool are 'step ahead' of Manchester United in Memphis Depay hunt

The Dutch winger is one of the most wanted men in world football.

It looks as though Dutch winger Memphis Depay is set to become the most wanted man in Europe this summer.

The Netherlands international has been in stunning form this season and he has therefore been linked with several of European football's big clubs. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have been linked with his signature.

In the Premier League Tottenham Hotspur have been linked in the past, but it is Liverpool and Manchester United that are now considered the front-runners.

This week it was reported by the Daily Mail that the Premier League rivals were fighting for his signature - with Depay almost certain to be on his way out of PSV this summer.

Now, the Dutch champions' technical director Marcel Brands has commented on the reports. His words will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans, who he says are a step ahead of Manchester United in the pursuit of Depay.

He told FOX Sports:

"They [Liverpool and PSG] are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United. They have only made ​​known their interest. But Bayern Munich, as I've read, there is not it."

Depay has been in sensational form this term. He has scored a fantastic 24 goals in 38 appearances as he has helped the Eindhoven club to the Eredivisie title.

Liverpool it seems have the upper hand on United in terms of getting in there first, but this transfer battle is far from over.
