Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has told The Mail he believes Chelsea's John Terry is a better defender than Sol Campbell.
The ex-Gunner is of the belief John Terry is the best of his generation, matched only by Rio Ferdinand, who is set to retire this year.
Keown played alongside Campbell for Arsenal during their 2003/04 unbeaten Premier League season, referred to now as their Invincibles team.
He said there is not much in it, but Terry has the edge.
He explained: "If you compare people to their contemporaries then he and Rio Ferdinand have been the best, with Sol Campbell not far behind if he is considered in the same period."
Keown added that he felt Terry had done well to get past a key weakness in his game to become such a consistently impressive defender.
He said: "Pace has been the only thing he lacked and he has worked around that, but if he was quick there would be absolutely no doubt he is the best (in the entire history of the Premier League)."
Former Tottenham defender Campbell made one of the most controversial transfers of the Premier League era when he left the club to join Arsenal on a free transfer.
Terry has been a one-club man through his career, and the 34-year-old is on course to win his fourth league title this season. Campbell won the league twice, and won three FA Cups, while Terry has won five.
