Jamie Carragher reveals the advice Sir Alex Ferguson gave Liverpool boss

The Reds icon says the ex-Manchester United boss penned the Northern Irishman a letter after he had won promotion to the Premier League.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher admits he is impressed by Sir Alex Ferguson's fear of not being a winner - even during the last year of the Manchester United great's career, according to his regular column in the Daily Mail.

Indeed, the 37-year-old has recalled a letter sent by Fergie to Brendan Rodgers after the now Liverpool boss had achieved promotion to the Premier League with Swansea City.

In it, the Manchester United manager at the time told Rodgers not to lose his fear of winning.

More recently, Carragher has heaped praise on Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho for possessing that very characteristic.

The Sky Sports pundit said in the Mail: "Sir Alex Ferguson was the same. I remember one day at Melwood, Liverpool’s training ground, chatting with Brendan Rodgers. He told me how Ferguson had sent him a letter after Swansea had won promotion to the Premier League, which contained a significant line: never lose that fear.

"The conversation took place in the season that turned out to be Ferguson’s last as Manchester United manager. Some in his position would have relaxed but I found it incredible, after all he had achieved, the anxiety of not being a winner stalked him."

Of course, Manchester United fans may just poke fun at the fact Liverpool boss Rodgers has actually not won anything - so he can't have a fear of not doing something he hasn't yet done...

It's also intriguing to think what Fergie would have written, if anything at all, had he known the Northern Irishman would go on to manage the Scot's fierce rivals Liverpool

Carragher's comments, though, are certainly revealing of the ex-Manchester United coach's winning mentality - although that's nothing shockingly new. The fear of not being a winner is something we can all relate to.
