Former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports that Liverpool need to buy experienced players in the summer transfer window.
The former Rangers star believes that Liverpool are having a disappointing season and has highlighted the types of signings they need to make for next season.
“But if I’ve got one criticism of Liverpool, they need to buy more experienced players,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.
“They need to buy a couple of players that have been round the block and seen it, not only at league level but also at European level, for them to start picking up and progressing.”
While Wilkins does have a point, one need to consider the fact that Liverpool did sign players with experience in the summer of 2014.
Dejan Lovren had a brilliant season at Southampton in 2013-14, while Mario Balotelli - signed from AC Milan - had won the Premier League with Manchester City in his first spell in England.
At the time, the signings that Liverpool made did appear to be good enough to challenge for the Premier League top four, but things have not panned out that way.
With Liverpool now looking likely to miss out on a Champions League place, it will be tougher for the Merseyside outfit to attract players with loads of top-flight and European experience.
