Bertrand: Southampton can still make it into the Europa League

Southampton are locked in a three-way battle for a spot in the Europa League.

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has told the club's official website that his side are going all out to claim a spot in Europe.

The Saints are locked in a three-way fight with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool for a place in the Europa League, and Bertrand says that his teammates are determined to come out on top.

He feels that Hull City's win over Liverpool in midweek has boosted confidence in the squad, and insists that Southampton will be aiming to win every one of their next three games to ensure they come out on top.

“We’re going to go into the next three games to get maximum points," he said. “That leads us up to the big one at the end of the season. I think the game plan was the same even before the result the other night.

“We haven’t sat down, the game plan doesn’t change. We will go at it and try and pick up as many points as we can."

Southampton take on Sunderland, Leicester City and Aston Villa in their next three games so they will feel that they have a good opportunity to rack up some points before a tough final-day match against Manchester City.

Many observers would suggest that Southampton have had a successful season whatever happens from here on in, but there is a steely resolve in their squad not to take their foot off the gas.

The Saints have defied expectations already this season, but they now want to ensure their hard work counts for something and qualify for European football.

That would be a monumental achievement for Ronald Koeman's side, and it would mean that anticipation for next season at St. Mary's would be huge.
