Agents reportedly offer Manchester United stars Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata to Barcelona

The two Manchester United stars could both be pondering moves away from Old Trafford.

According to a report in Catalan outlet Sport, agents representing Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata have been in contact with Barcelona, sounding out the possibility of a move for the pair to the Camp Nou.

The report also claims the activity by representatives of the two players, comes with the knowledge of Manchester United, and indicates a willingness by the Premier League giants to consider offers.

However, at this stage there isn't believed to be any serious interest from Barcelona, amidst their transfer planning, once the FIFA transfer ban ends in January 2016.

This isn't the first time either player has been linked with Barcelona. During previous summers, Rooney in particular was rumoured to be of interest to the Catalan side, although that interest appears to have waned (excusing the pun!), with the passage of time.

As an attacking player, there is no apparent need for Rooney at Barcelona, although he might provide an option as a creative midfielder, given his deeper role with Manchester United over recent years.

When it comes to Juan Mata, however, the report claims that a desire to make a return to La Liga, could lead to interest from Barcelona for the 27-year-old Spain international.

The main obstacle for Mata is believed to be a lack of any real need for a player of his role, operating principally behind the strikers. Another factor is whether he would be seen as more of a central midfielder, or challenge for a attacking place with the 'MSN' trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar.

In the case of both Rooney and Mata, it's currently believed that Barcelona haven't taken enquiries any further, although if their agents have made motions, it could indicate the pair are considering a departure from Old Trafford.
