Borussia Dortmund have announced on their official Twitter page that Ilkay Gundogan will not sign an extension to his current contract.
The Germany international midfielder will be out of contract at Dortmund in June 2016, and the Bundesliga outfit have declared that he will leave thereafter.
Good news for Manchester United
Gundogan is one of the best players in Europe, and the latest news will come as good news for Manchester United.
Sky Sports reported earlier this month that United are interested in signing the 24-year-old in the summer transfer window and are prepared to pay as much as £21.5 million in transfer fee for his services.
Dortmund’s announcement about Gundogan means that the former Bundesliga champions could have to part company with the German at the end of the season.
After all, if Dortmund hold on to the midfielder until the end of the 2015-16 campaign, then they will lose him for nothing.
This means that if United make an approach, then they could get him in the summer, and get him for less than £21.5m.
The reason is that with Gundogan effectively on the market in the summer transfer window, Dortmund have lost the upperhand on any negotiations with other clubs.
The German club cannot demand as much as they want because other clubs would know that they cannot afford to let go of the 24-year-old for free.
