Report: Leeds United request information ahead of potential Simone Napoli signing

Leeds United are interested in signing Simone Napoli, according to reports in Italy.

Leeds United are interested in signing Italian centre-back Simone Napoli, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

The 20-year-old began his career at Juventus before being released two summers ago, without making an appearance for their first team.

His next move was to sign as a free agent with Argentine side Gimnasia, before signing with Slovenian side Nova Gorica.

Napoli still plays for Nova Gorica, where he has featured 12 times this season, scoring twice.

Tuttomercatoweb report that Leeds have already 'requested information' ahead of a potential summer move. The report states that they would face competition from Italian Serie B sides, also suggesting that other English clubs may be interested.

Last year Napoli told GianlucadiMarzio.com the player he most admired was Italian World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro.

He is not a player Leeds would be able to sign on the cheap. The GianlucadiMarzio.com reported in September that Nova Gorica paid €3.5 million to sign him, with the player penning a three-year deal.

For Leeds, a bigger priority has to be re-signing Sol Bamba, who has impressed on loan from Palermo this summer.

If Giuseppe Bellusci is to be sold, and Dario del Fabro returns on loan, then he could be a more viable option at centre-back to add depth to the squad, but fans may prefer the club promote one of their own academy talents or invest in a proven Championship player.
