West Ham’s current number one has saved three spot kicks on the bounce and Walker believes that will give him the confidence and a good chance of saving a fourth on the bounce.
“Adrian saving his last three penalties is a great stat. Saving penalties is all about confidence - Confidence is a massive part of being a goalkeeper so when Adrian faces his fourth penalty, he’ll dive a split second earlier. The next taker will definitely know that stat and it could get into his head,” he said.
Adrian has been one of the club’s most consistent players this season and when he plays well, it tends to give the rest of the team more confidence.
It’s easier for a defence to push further up the pitch and take more risks if they feel their goalkeeper needs less protection.
He’s also good in high pressure situations in terms of finding ways to come out of goal to take the pressure away from his defence.
Whether that’s coming to claim the ball or coming out to punch, he’s been good in situations where he does the defence’s job for them, instantly allowing the pressure over West Ham to be released.
His mentality with regards to penalties is impressive but sooner or later he’s going to let one in and it’s important at that point, that he responds positively and works hard to save the next one.
