With Newcastle United struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table following a club-record-breaking run of seven consecutive defeats in the division, the need for defensive reinforcements is fairly evident.
Yet Toon fans may be dismayed to hear that a former target who came close to signing for the club, is now impressing elsewhere.
Back in 2013, Brazilian defender Douglas, who was with Dutch side FC Twente at the time, emerged as a target for the north east club.
But, as Sky Sports reported at the time, Newcastle ultimately opted against a deal for the centre-back, despite admitting they had come close to recruiting the South American.
Douglas opted instead to move to Russia with Dynamo Moscow, where he has made 37 league appearances, scoring twice, in the seasons since.
Whether he would have thrived at Newcastle and coped with the demands of the Premier League is open to debate.
However, Toon fans were given a glimpse of the Brazilian’s fine tackling ability during a Russian Premier League clash between Dynamo and Amkar Perm.
With an opposition player bearing down on goal, Douglas pulled off the kind of last-ditch goal-saving tackle the Toon have been lacking this term.
On the basis of this clip, the Magpies must surely wish they had signed him when they had the chance.
