Sheffield Wednesday have generally struggled for goals this season.
Lee, who has been in fine scoring form recently, caught up with Maguire, but the striker was keen not to let his teammate get ahead of him.
As a result, Maguire has been determined to hit the back of the net with more frequency and his most recent goal saw him move back ahead of his colleague.
It is something which has pleased the attacker, but he does admit that Lee has been key for Stuart Gray's team this season.
“I had a little chuckle with him at half time at Bournemouth saying how he was on the same amount of goals as me,” Maguire said.
“The fitness coach said I’d better go out and get one which happily I did. I’m just happy to be ahead of him. But, in all seriousness, he’s been a vital player for us, the same as last year.”
In truth, Maguire should be on more goals than Lee for the season due to the more advanced position he plays, but it is testament to the central midfielder's ability that he has been able to keep pace for so long.
Despite his impressive form, Lee's future at Hillsborough is still unknown, though, as his contract is running out in the summer.
Wednesday are hoping to create a squad capable of getting promoted from the Championship next term and it remains to be seen whether Gray will consider Lee good enough to be part of his new look side.
