Outspoken Millers boss Steve Evans has been fired up all season, but with his team securing their Sky Bet Championship status with the 2-1 win over Reading on Tuesday night, the former Crawley manager has let his guard slip. Furthermore, the Leeds United official Twitter account has also laid down the gauntlet.
Evans appeared on Sky Sports programme "The Morning View" and vowed that if sufficient Tweets were received by the studio he would wear flips-flops, a sombrero and a t-shirt in the dugout for Rotherham's final game of the season against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.
It would add to the surreal atmosphere already surrounding the game. With nothing at stake during the 90 minutes of football, the possible return of Leeds' banned president Massimo Cellino to the troubled club is creating a stir, and Leeds fans are expected to make a vocal protest in support of head coach Neil Redfearn, and against Cellino's continued ownership.
Now, if the heavyweight Evans does indeed show how relaxed he is with his beachwear attire he is sure to add spice to a feisty occasion as the Elland Road crowd like nothing more than an easy target in the opposition dugout.
Sky Sports have created a #SombreroForSteve hashtag, and Leeds United's official Twitter account is also playing along, tweeting a picture of a beach ball and a pair of Leeds United branded flip-flops already in place next to the away dugout at Elland Road.
With sleet experienced in Leeds this week and unsettled weather forecasted for the weekend and temperatures struggling to reach ten degrees celcius, it remains to be seen if Evans will carry out his beachwear threat. Certainly, it appears to be in the hands of football fans throughout the country to make this happen.
