Everton manager Roberto Martinez has told the Liverpool Echo that the club’s fans know exactly what they are getting in the form of central defender John Stones.
Stones was superb in the match against Manchester United last weekend, but Martinez has suggested that Everton supporters didn’t need that performance to know what a good player he is.
“Our fans know John inside out and didn’t need to see him perform against Manchester United to know what a diamond we have,” said Martinez.
“But John is level-headed and he knows the areas in which he needs to improve.”
Stones is definitely a player who can be a key feature of the Everton team for several seasons.
He’s shown versatility with roles at right-back and through the middle of the defence, which will increase the number of chances he’s likely to get next year for the club.
It’s important he shows that determined mentality to improve on weaknesses in his game, because the Premier League is full of some of the best forwards around the world.
The Everton defence is also going to be under the magnifying glass at the start of next season, because it has been a weaker area of the team over the course of the current campaign.
Fans will want to see improvements from the team and from Stones specifically and many will be watching him closely this weekend against Aston Villa to see if he can maintain the standards he set for himself in that game against United.
