Report: Newcastle join Villa in the race for Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford

Newcastle United and Aston Villa are reportedly fighting it out to sign Patrick Bamford from Chelsea.

Newcastle United are hoping to sign Patrick Bamford from Chelsea this summer, according to a report in the Chronicle.

Bamford had been linked to Aston Villa in the Daily Mail, but Newcastle have reportedly joined the race for the youngster's signature.

The 21-year-old has been in hugely impressive form in the Championship this season with Middlesbrough, scoring 19 times, and Newcastle apparently feel that he is ready to make the step up.

That opinion is apparently shared by his current club Chelsea, too, and the Blues seem keen for the striker to go out on loan to a Premier League side.

Bamford is considered one of the brightest young strikers in England, but he is probably not good enough to play regularly at Chelsea at this moment in time and, as a result, Jose Mourinho's side may feel his development would be better served elsewhere.

If he were to join Newcastle he would be likely to go straight into their first team, as the Magpies have struggled for goals this season.

The Tynesiders have lacked a potent front man and if they were to bring him in, Newcastle would be hoping that he could hit the ground running at St. James' Park.
