Report: De Gea decision could have impact on whether United sign Depay or Bale

An interesting report has come out regarding Manchester United's potential summer transfer business.

According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea’s future could determine if it is Memphis Depay or Gareth Bale who plays for Louis van Gaal’s side next season.

The report cites unnamed sources, which claim Tottenham Hotspur ‘keeper Hugo Lloris is on ‘stand-by’ if the Spanish international does swap Old Trafford for the Bernabeu this summer.

But even more interestingly, the sources also claim that Memphis Depay’s proposed move to United is as not advanced as it might be because the club are holding out for the prospect of Gareth Bale moving to old Trafford if De Gea does sign for Real.

As complicated as that may sound it does make some sense, with De Gea yet to extend a contract that currently runs out in 2016.

It may well be that the Spanish stopper is simply waiting to see if United qualify for the Champions League before committing his long-term future to them. But the stories are not going to stop until he decides one way or another and that decision is made public.

United certainly would not need both Depay and Bale – two players who occupy the same position on the pitch. But losing De Gea would be a blow in itself no matter who they sign to replace him.
