Ray Parlour: What Sunderland will be hoping for before their final game

Former Arsenal man Ray Parlour has suggested what needs to happen before Sunderland's last Premier League game against Chelsea.

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour suggested on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT what needs to happen for Sunderland before their final game of the season.

The Black Cats take on Chelsea on the final day of the campaign, which is a massive game they may have to win to stay in the Premier League.

It’s a match where Dick Advocaat’s team would be the massive underdogs, but Parlour has suggested what might work in favour of his team.

“You look at their last two games, Arsenal and Chelsea, and that’s so tough – I think they (Sunderland) really need Chelsea to have won the title before the final game,” he said.

Chelsea are within touching distance of the title and Jose Mourinho will be wary of his team needing to go into the final game to get a result.

The advantage for Sunderland if Chelsea win the league before the end of the season is that the Blues will naturally take their foot off of the gas.

Mourinho will always insist that his side have a professional duty to play well considering the other teams in the fight to avoid the drop, but it’s difficult for them to perform to the same level with the pressure lifted.

Sunderland just have to fight to try and create a gap before the final game and if they go down having been completely outplayed by the best team in the country, so be it, but hopefully they will be in a position to take advantage of any Chelsea complacency.
