The 30-year-old defender announced on Tuesday that he was expecting to leave the club in the summer. Fans' reaction on Twitter says it all.
Johnson arrived as an £18 million signing from Portsmouth in 2009, but in nearly 200 appearances has never become a popular player at the club, with many fans seeing the defender as embodying the mediocrity they have witnessed at Anfield in recent seasons.
Following the 1-0 defeat to Hull City in the Barclays Premier League on Tuesday evening, Johnson admitted he did not see a new contract forthcoming and expected to leave the club in the summer.
This admission sparked an immediate response on Twitter from Liverpool fans who are demanding a higher class of player as Liverpool look to react to what has been another disappointing campaign.
In the summer I will drive Glen Johnson to the airport myself, pay for his plane ticket, I'll even pack his suitcase for him— The Redmen (@LiamLFCButler) April 28, 2015
@SkyFootball this season's not been so bad after all then...— Todd Rafferty (@Toddlaarr) April 29, 2015
Certainly, the Liverpool fans' reaction has been immediate and damning and perhaps tells its own story as to why Johnson seems pretty relaxed about leaving the Anfield club.
Nonetheless, it is likely that there will be a significant number of Premier League suitors hoping to snap the defender up in the summer.
