Gary Gardner comments on possibility of playing under Tim Sherwood

Tim Sherwood Press Conference Smiling 12/02/2014

Aston Villa owned midfielder Gary Gardner wants the chance to impress Tim Sherwood when he returns from a loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

Aston Villa owned midfielder Gary Gardner told Forest Player what he feels will be the key to him getting a chance under Tim Sherwood next season.

Gardner has been superb for loan side Nottingham Forest and will link up with Villa after this weekend, with Forest facing Cardiff in their final game of the Championship season.

Sherwood has already shown that he is not afraid to use younger players at Villa Park and it will be interesting to see if he rewards Gardner for the impact he’s had with Forest this season.

“It’s a massive opportunity, I’ve just got to maintain my fitness and go back to Villa and train and impress another new gaffer. That’s part of football really, I’ve just got to impress him and hopefully I can be involved,” he said.

Gardner admitted in the same Forest Player interview that he’s hoping to be involved in the FA Cup final against Arsenal, but the more likely scenario is that Sherwood will nurse him into the team for next season.

Hopefully Villa will still be a Premier League club because that would expose Gardner to a higher standard of football, allowing him to further refine his game to become a more complete midfield player.

Forest have a good chance of getting him back again for next season if Sherwood feels he’s not up to the current standard he expects from any Aston Villa player.

That would be a surprise considering the hard work he’s put in this season and the fact Sherwood has offered chances to less experienced midfielder sin recent weeks such as Jack Grealish.

Gardner’s focus for now will be on Forest’s final game and if he doesn’t get a chance in the FA Cup final, it will be about impressing in pre-season and then cashing in when next year gets underway.
