If Newcastle endured relegation to the Championship, it could actually help the club.
The Magpies are five points clear of the final relegation place, with four games of the season to go, but on current form a relegation would be no surprise.
This seems like it would be disastrous for the club, and yes, for the fans it would be a dreadful occurrence to see the Magpies turning out in the second tier.
However, there could be a benefit of relegation that makes a drop to the Championship the perfect outcome for Newcastle.
Mike Ashley remains in charge of the club whilst they are financially viable and able to stay self-sufficient whilst turning a profit. This is the philosophy that has seen the club teeter on the brink of relegation, and in the Championship it is a philosophy that cannot be continued.
Highly paid players will have to be released to fund other areas of the club, and the lack of TV money means the club will immediately lose their financial stability.
This makes the Magpies a much less enticing prospect to Ashley, who will have to once again financially involve himself in the footballing matters.
They would not be the profit making machine they have been for the last few seasons, and their current selling system would likely see them struggle in the Championship.
The fans may not want to see the club in this situation, but Ashley would be most heavily hit by a relegation. It may just be the thing that sees him lose all interest in the club and decide against remaining in control of the Magpies.
And that would be great news for Newcastle fans.
