Are Celtic's hopes of signing Ikechi Anya over after the Hornets clinched promotion to the Premier League?

Celtic's hopes of signing Ikechi Anya this summer may just have disappeared with Watford's promotion to the Premier League.

Anya was linked with Celtic by The Mail early in the season, while the Scottish Sun reported the winger was a January transfer target.

No move has yet materialised for the Watford star, who appears likely to stay put after the team's promotion to England's top flight.

Anya has 10 international caps for Scotland and three goals, including one against Germany.

Earlier this month Anya told the Watford Observer he intended to stay put if the Hornets could secure their passage out of the Championship.

He said: "I want to be in the Premier League and regular European competitions and World Cup competitions."

Celtic could of course offer a quicker path into Europe than Watford, but Anya is not likely to walk away from the club now they are in the Premier League.

He has made 34 appearances for Watford this season in the Championship, providing seven assists.

Celtic did manage to sign Dundee United winger Stuart Armstrong in January, but any move for Anya will have to be placed on ice for at least another year while he sees if he can make a go of it for Watford in the Premier League.
