Why Newcastle fans should be worried if John Carver’s recent comments are truthful

John Carver has claimed his squad are giving everything, and that is a worrying thought.

The interim head coach has recently come out to the Shields Gazette to claim his team are giving everything they can in the fight to pick up a win.

“The one thing I will say about this group of people in there is that they’re giving everything,” Carver said. “I don’t think they can give any more.”

This would normally be a thought that would please fans of a club, especially one such as the Magpies who are frightfully close to a potential relegation to the Championship, but in Newcastle’s case it is a worrying assessment.

According to Carver, this squad are giving their all, but are still on the end of seven straight defeats. This is the joint-longest losing run in the Premier League this season, and the first time Newcastle have lost seven games since 1977, and if they are giving their all and still losing the actual talent of the squad must come into question.

This losing run is terrible, and it does not look like it is going to end any time soon.

Realistically, the Magpies could end the season without picking up another point, and that is a damning indictment of the strength of a side who are supposedly giving their all.

Clearly there are issues at Newcastle, and Carver’s management is one of them. However, he is choosing players who are not playing at their full capability, and that is hardly going to make his job easier.

This lack of effort could be seen during Saturday’s loss to Swansea, with all three goals conceded by the Magpies resulting from arguably some of the worst defending seen in the Premier League this season.

Carver is not blameless in Newcastle’s struggles, but he should vocalise his displeasure at the lack of effort put in by the players, rather than suggesting that they are giving their all - as that is an even more worrying thought for fans of the Tyneside club.
