Some Tottenham Hotspur fans clearly do not rate one of their recent breakout stars.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has been one of the club’s most recent breakout stars, but is he as good as some would have us believe?
It may be a strange question to ask when you consider the 20-year-old’s talent and commitment to the cause. But a recent article from HITC about Spurs’ weekend performance against Southampton generated some interesting comments about the Algerian international.
Bentaleb has played 31 times for Tottenham this season, forming a midfield partnership with Ryan Mason. In that time he has put in some great performances, but it appears some of Spurs’ fans are not happy with his contribution and his place in the team.
While the article in question focused on the performances of Federico Fazio and Ben Davies, Bentaleb came in for plenty of criticism of his own in the comments section.
Below you can read a selection of what Tottenham fans had to say about the young midfielder:
Tom said: ‘The constant ever present in midfield, supposedly defensive midfielder at that, Bentaleb, just because he strolls about making the far too often five-yard pass with the occasional cross field one thrown in he escapes all criticism.
His contribution is natural but he gives the ball away at times passing blindly; never makes any interception of note, shouldered off the ball easily, points to players when he could cover them himself. Our performance dipped on his return from Afcon where it was improving every game he was away.
He should have been dropped after a shocking display against United and he should not be in squad never mind the regular first-team. New contract talks should be shelved and he (should be) shipped out.
George said: ‘I have been saying this since the beginning of season that he really has no presence and that he needs to develop both physically and tackling because he is no Sandro! Also the same applies with Mason, I don't think this role suits him either; again no presence, not many assists and not many goals! What does he do, apart from run around quicker with no affect?’
Mark said: ‘I'm with Tom. I don't see what some fans and obviously Poch sees in Bentaleb. His passing accuracy is down to the fact that most Sunday league footballers can pass a ball accurately over 5 to 10yards, either sideways or backwards. Invariably when he passes forward it’s to an opponent. He offers nothing in terms of goals or goal assists. Handy squad player but should not be in the team week in, week out. COYS’
