Sunderland fans react on Twitter to Duncan Watmore's Under-21 performance against Tottenham

Sunderland Gates

Sunderland youngster Duncan Watmore has grabbed the headlines.

Sunderland Under-21's managed to see off their counterparts from Tottenham on Monday evening, beating Spurs 1-0 at Stevenage's Lamex Stadium.

The winning goal came from winger Duncan Watmore, who struck just after half-time to score the only goal of the game and hand the Black Cats the win.

The 21-year-old wide man has been in great form for the Sunderland Under-21's, but has still played just 27 minutes for the Sunderland first-team - and that appearance came over a year ago in an FA Cup tie against Carlisle United.

The Mirror reported upon Dick Advocaat's arrival as manager that Watmore would finally see some first-team action, but that has yet to happen, despite Sunderland struggling at the wrong end of the table.

The former Altrincham forward was deemed to be one for the future when Sunderland signed him in the summer of 2013, and after a loan spell with Hibernian last season, Watmore will have wanted to push for a first-team place at the Stadium of Light.

Now, he's really making his case with another goal, and Sunderland fans took to Twitter to discuss whether he should be given a chance in the Premier League - and the response was almost unanimous.

Almost all Sunderland fans believed that Watmore's latest goal was another sign that he should be playing before the end of the season, with many suggesting that he can provide the element of unpredictability in Sunderland's fight against relegation.

Here are some of the reactions from Sunderland fans after Watmore's match-winning goal against Tottenham Under-21's...
