The Portuguese winger-cum-forward currently plays for Benfica, but he is yet to make an impact with the Primeira Liga champions, barely featuring and sent out on loan to Spanish side Cordoba in January.
Since that temporary move he has featured 16 times but he has failed to score and has just one assist to date.
That is in stark contrast to his final loan spell while at United, where he scored 14 goals for Pacos de Ferreira and subsequently earned himself a permanent transfer to Benfica.
However, in hindsight that upturn in form appears to be more of a blip than a transformation, and after just six appearances for his parent-club and with another failed loan spell drawing to a close, could Reading really take the plunge?
The report claims the Royals are interested in signing the former United player this summer, and at just 24 he could be worth a punt.
That said, Reading will surely not want to pay much for a player who is yet to prove he was anything more than a bizarre signing by former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
He has pace to burn, and he has proved he can score regularly when confidence is at a high, but the mooted move still seems strange when you consider his last failed spell in England.
