Derby look as though they are going to sneak into the top six by the end of this weekend, which will give the side a chance to avenge the memory of defeat in the final last season, something Roberts believes they can work to their advantage.
“What an experience they had a year ago, losing to QPR with virtually the last kick of the game. They have been to a play-off final in the last 12 months, they’ve tasted defeat, they know that horrible feeling,” said Roberts.
“Steve McClaren will be in that dressing room saying ‘listen, we don’t want that feeling from 12 months ago, we want the feeling QPR had, that winning feeling’.”
Derby are under pressure because they are a massive football club, with a chance to get back to the riches of Premier League football.
They have bee clinging onto a position in the top six having slid away from the top of the table a few months back.
It was heart-breaking for the club last season, but they have a chance to set the record straight and they need to play smart and sensible football over the two legs of a play-off semi-final before that potential chance to go to Wembley.
However, they have a job to do this weekend against Reading because if they fail to get a result, Brentford are poised to leap above them to take the final play-off position and they won’t hesitate to condemn Derby to a position in the Championship for another year.
