The American failed to clear effectively in the game against Manchester City, which paved the way for Sergio Aguero to hit the back of the net, putting the champions in front.
“You need to have that character to bounce back. It's not about how many mistakes he makes it's how he reacts,” said Sherwood.
“He's a good character and I know the boys aren't pointing any fingers at him. He's made a mistake. No-one is putting blame on him.”
Sherwood is an obviously enthusiastic manager and someone who will always focus on the positives rather than reflecting on the negatives.
He has a big challenge over the course of this week in terms of monitoring Guzan to ensure that he doesn’t let his head drop.
Hopefully the American will respond and Sherwood won’t feel a need to step in, but he will stress that Guzan has been one of the club’s most consistent players so far this season.
With the FA Cup final coming up, Sherwood needs Guzan and Shay Given playing off of each other and competing to make his decision as difficult as possible.
That will increase the quality between his goalkeepers and should ensure that Guzan remains focused on the rest of the season, rather than looking back on the mistake he has just made.
