A young West Ham United goalkeeper has impressed for the Development Squad, so what's next for him?
But could a talented goalkeeper be pushing for a chance in the match-day squad following some fine performances for the Hammers’ under-21s?
Raphael Spiegel is a 22-year-old Swiss-born stopper who is yet to feature for West Ham’s senior side. And with a contract that expires in the summer he may never achieve that particular dream.
But with current second-choice ‘keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen now 40 – and also approaching the end of his own contract – the time could be right to offer Spiegel a new deal and make him the Hammers’ back-up.
Spiegel shone in a recent development squad match against Manchester City, pulling off a number of brilliant saves to ensure his side ran out 1-0 winners. And it would not have gone unnoticed among those deciding who will act as back-up to Adrian next season and beyond.
A tall, imposing figure who is at an age when he will be hoping to make the next step up, Spiegel would be a risk but one worth taking for a West Ham side set to benefit from youth in the years to come.
