Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon has told the Sunderland Echo that he was pleased with the point that his side picked up against Stoke City at the weekend.
Sunderland drew 1-1 with Stoke on Saturday and Pantilimon felt that the result was a good one, despite his side falling into the relegation zone.
“It was important to take some points there,” Pantilimon said. “The most important thing was we played well and created chances. It’s a good point, in my opinion.
Why might the comments be worrying?
Sunderland have struggled to pick up points all season and, put simply, the time for avoiding defeats has passed.
The Black Cats need wins and to continue drawing for the rest of the season would put them in a lot of trouble.
The whole squad needs to realise that single points are not good enough anymore. It should be win at all costs.
Taking on a Stoke City side who have very little left to play for presented Sunderland with a great chance to get a much needed win under their belts and if Pantilimon's opinion is shared by the rest of the Black Cats squad it has to be a worry.
Pantilimon said that the 'most important' thing was that the squad played well and created chances, but with the club in this much trouble style does not count for much; it is only results which matter.
Sunderland need to start putting more pressure on themselves to get victories, and their draw at Stoke can only be considered a poor result, at this stage of the season.
