Tottenham Hotspur came away from Southampton with a share of the spoils after the two sides drew 2-2 on Saturday.
Much has been made of the need for Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino to strengthen his side this summer, with Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin regularly linked with a move to White Hart Lane (as reported by the Mirror among others).
If the French international did ultimately arrive in North London he could feature alongside Nabil Bentaleb; a player who has been one of Tottenham’s standout stars in Pochettino’s debut campaign. So how did the two players compare this weekend?
As you can see from the statistics above, the Tottenham player narrowly got the better of his older rival when it came to passing accuracy, with Bentaleb achieving 90 per cent and Schneiderlin two per cent less.
The Algeria international also outperformed the Southampton star in terms of outfield blocks and ball recoveries. But that aside, Schneiderlin put the youngster in the shade.
The Saints midfielder outshone his Tottenham opponent when it came to effective tackles, duels, aerial battles and interceptions, while he also played more key passes.
In short, while Bentaleb is very much a work-in-progress, Schneiderlin is a ready-made star.
No wonder Tottenham reportedly want him; but it is also the very reason Southampton will not let him go without a fight.
