Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer says he believes the club will avoid relegation, but he cannot say how.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes the club will avoid relegation despite their woeful run of form.

The club have been sucked into the battle for survival after failing to win a game since February, and lost again at the weekend, 3-2 to Swansea City.

Shearer told Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night that he feels the club will do enough to survive, despite being unable to predict where they will pick up points.

He said: "I don't think they will, but I think to be certain they need another win. I don't know where that win is going to come from, the way they are playing at this moment in time."

Sunderland 33 5 15 13 30

Burnley 34 5 11 18 26

Newcastle's situation will become a lot clearer when the three teams below them have played their games in hand, but they cannot afford to rely on the teams around them failing to overtake their 35 point haul.

The Toon's next game is against Leicester City away from home, a huge match for both teams, and the Foxes are the form team in the relegation battle, beating Burnley at the weekend in a big six-pointer.

The three following games are at home against West Brom, away to QPR, and at home to West Ham.

Shearer added of Carver, who is in a similar position to the one he once found himself in during his ill-fated spell as boss: "There's a lack of effort there from the players. I feel a bit for John Carver because he's from the area and he loves the football club, I just wish that a lot more of his players love the football club like he did."
