Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has not had the best of times since he swapped Southampton’s St Mary’s stadium for Anfield last summer.
For a fee of £20million, Liverpool signed a player who some believed could solve their defensive issues but has so far proved more a hindrance than a help for Brendan Rodgers.
After 33 matches for Liverpool, the 25-year-old was yet to justify his price-tag or suggest that he could form an effective defensive partnership with two of Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Emre Can in the club’s new-look back-three.
However, on his 34th appearance, the Croatian international finally stepped up and looked the part, even if Liverpool failed to take all three points in a match they were desperate to win.
Losing more ground in the race for a top-four finish was not on the agenda for Rodgers this weekend, but he is likely to be pleased with Lovren’s performance if little else.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Liverpool fans thought of Lovren’s contribution and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Can't we just go back to the time when Lovren have a bad game but we win?! Lovren doing good and we don't win is not nice, lads.— Gilang Galiartha (@galiartha) April 25, 2015
The fact that Lovren was arguably our man of the match but West Brom barely attacked says it all about today. So bad.— MrBoywunder (@MrBoywunder) April 25, 2015
Lovren remembered how to play football again today. Too bad everyone else played like— x (@xanderLFC) April 25, 2015
At least our £20 million defender Lovren has a good game. Not a waste of money at all.— ᅠᅠ (@ynwajay) April 25, 2015
