Former Manchester United and Everton star Phil Neville hails 'Rolls-Royce' quality John Stones

The former Everton captain is a big fan of the classy defender.

Everton produced a masterclass in counter-attacking football this afternoon as they rope-a-doped Manchester United in style at Goodison Park.

The side were happy to soak up pressure against United today, but broke with pace and ended up winning the game comfortably, 3-0.

While goals from James McCarthy and Kevin Mirallas started and finished the rout, John Stones bagged his first goal for the club to hit the second of the game.

The England international however was far more eye-catching at the other end of the pitch. Stones was fantastic at the back for Everton. Calm and composed when he needed to be and quick to the action when required, it was a performance which belied his age.

Stones came into special praise after the game from a former player for both Manchester United and Everton.

Phil Neville played nearly 400 games for Manchester United before joining Everton. He went on to captain the Toffees and play over 300 games for them before retiring in 2013.

He had kind words to say about Stones on Twitter after the game:

With Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz alongside Phil Jagielka this season Everton have struggled. But with Stones at the heart of defence Everton look an entirely different prospect and fans will hope he can avoid injury problems next term.
