Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has praised the club's decision to reward Jordan Henderson with an extended contract this week, telling the club's website that the former Sunderland man has become an outstanding player.
The ex-Arsenal and Manchester City star went on to say that Henderson's performances have been so good that he will make a difference in Liverpool's hopes to become one of the top clubs in European football once more.
"It's the best thing that could happen," Toure said after the deal was announced. "For me, Jordan is an amazing player, he is a top character.
"He likes to take responsibility, working hard every day in training and is really focused. He helps teammates. He is a great leader.
"This boy is a great, great player. He has signed and deserved to sign. If you want to be one of the best clubs in the world, you need players like him. This season, for me, he has been the best player."
Toure himself is out of contract in the summer like Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, but unlike the midfielder, has yet to decide to leave the club.
Despite Gerrard's impending departure, Toure feels Brendan Rodgers has a readymade replacement in Jordan Henderson to come in and step up to the plate as Liverpool's leader - encouraging words indeed considering the central defender has won titles at two different clubs in England, and is someone who is more than capable of judging a player's merits as a result.
"He is a perfect replacement for him because the boy takes responsibility and that's what you need," added the 34-year-old.
"You need leaders who can take responsibility - he is doing that and he loves it. The future is bright with him."
