Former Derby County and Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage has admitted on BT Sport that he had concerns about Southampton at the start of the season.
“I thought before the start of the season, like a lot of other people, that they would get relegated, but they have done absolute magnificent,” said the former Wales international.
Savage was probably not the only former footballer or pundit to think that Southampton would get relegated.
After all, the Saints lost a number of important players in the summer transfer window, including centre-back Dejan Lovren, attacking midfielder Adam Lallana, left-back Luke Shaw and striker Rickie Lambert.
Moreover, Mauricio Pochettino left his position as the Southampton manager and moved to North London outfit Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Southampton signed shrewdly in the summer and also appointed legendary Dutchman Ronald Koeman as their manager.
The Saints have defied expectations this campaign and have been arguably the story of the season.
Not so long ago, Southampton were actually in the running for a top-four finish in the Premier League, and they can still finish in a Europa League spot.
