The Mirror originally produced a story this week claiming that Depay had flown to England to begin talks with the Red Devils over a £25 million move to Old Trafford.
However, fresh reports now reveal that the 21-year-old was instead there to meet representatives of the Anfield club after receiving permission by the newly-crowned Eredivisie champions.
“Memphis Depay flew in by private jet for secret talks with Liverpool this week. The Mirror can reveal that it was Anfield officials – including MD Ian Ayre - he met in a hotel close to the airport,” the report claims.
A must-buy player for Liverpool?
Depay’s burgeoning reputation as one of Europe’s top talents has been in clear view this season after notching 20 league goals in 27 appearances.
He has an incredible amount of potential, and at just 21 years of age he looks a real coup at the alleged asking price reported by the Mirror of around £20 million.
The Reds bought a lot of players with potential last summer, and the risk of opting for youth over renowned stars ultimately backfired as they look on course for a finish outside of the Premier League’s top four.
However, Depay has already shown enough to be regarded as a top player for today, rather than an exciting player for the future, therefore it’s imperative the Merseysiders make their move quickly.
Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen on the player, yet the Mirror report goes on to say that the Anfield club have made a good impression and a deal is a distinct possibility.
