Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Ayoze Perez is not suited to the current Newcastle United team.
“I do like him, but I think that he should be in a team that is doing very well,” said the 47-year-old. “I don’t think he should be in a team that has to fight, fight, fight. At the moment, Newcastle have to fight, fight, fight.”
Perez has been one of the few bright sparks in what is turning out to be a hugely disappointing season for Newcastle.
Signed from Tenerife in the summer of 2014, the 21-year-old has looked bright and lively whenever he has been called into action.
The Spaniard started the Premier League game against Swansea on Saturday and scored the opening goal of the encounter in the 20th minute.
Perez is far from the finished article, but his touch and movement are signs that he is a player who can become truly brilliant in the coming years.
With Newcastle struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment, it is indeed not a great environment for the youngster, but it could also make him stronger mentally.
