Why signing Rod Fanni would be a bad decision for Liverpool

Liverpool Wall

If Liverpool want to be taken seriously, then they need to avoid signings like Marseille's Rod Fanni.

According to The Guardian on Friday, Liverpool has shown an interest in veteran Marseille defender Rod Fanni.

The 33-year-old is available on a free this summer when his contract runs out at the end of the season, and apparently Brendan Rodgers wants to bring him to Anfield.

One of the sure fire signs that the end of the season is upon us comes when teams are linked with all types of players, but the rumour of Fanni to Liverpool has to be one of the strangest yet.

After falling out of both the Champions League and Europa League and likely missing out on the top four of the Premier League, it would be expected for Liverpool to try and strengthen quite heavily this summer, but in order to do that they need to ad quality to the side, add depth to weak areas and looks for players that are going to enhance the squad.

Fanni, although a former France international, ticks none of those boxes. You have to question the validity of the rumour when it is a player that the Marseille fans deem isn’t even good enough for them.

It was only last week when the former Rennes man made a huge mistake in defence and all but gave Nantes the winning goal in the league, this from a player that has made over 450 first-team appearances in French football.

In his pomp, Fanni was a great Ligue 1 player, he can play at either centre-back or right-back and showed great appetite to get forward and was always strong through the middle.

You have to remember that this is a player that Marcelo Bielsa cast out from the squad at the start of the season and was only brought back when he had no options left.

If Liverpool are serious about becoming a force in English football and breaking into the top four, then Fanni is one to avoid; it certainly doesn’t reflect the image of the club would like to project.

Fanni to Liverpool would be one of the most bizarre signings if it did happen this summer, and it would leave one asking questions over the club's intentions.
