West Ham United’s Alex Song: What Arsenal need to challenge for Premier League title next season

Barcelona-owned West Ham United midfielder Alex Song believes that Arsenal need to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.

West Ham United midfielder Alex Song has told Sky Sports that Arsenal need to sign two players in the summer transfer window to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Song, currently on loan at West Ham from Spanish giants Barcelona, is a former Arsenal player.

“I don’t think a lot,” the 27-year-old said on the Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football Club when asked what Arsenal are missing to challenge for the Premier League title. “I think they need two or three more players to come in and make the team stronger…

“I think they need two or three players. I think they need a midfield player who will sit (in front of the back four). I think they need a centre-back as well. if they get these two, then they can challenge for the top.”

It is interesting that Song still thinks that Arsenal need a defensive midfielder and a centre-back in the summer.

In Frenchman Francis Coquelin, the Gunners have found a player who can play the role perfectly. The 23-year-old has been superb for Arsenal in defensive midfield since returning from a loan spell at Charlton Athletic in December.

Moreover, England international midfielder Jack Wilshere has been earmarked for the holding midfield role.

Perhaps signing a similar player in the summer is unnecessary. If Coquelin does indeed struggle next season, then Wilshere could be made the first choice defensive midfielder.

As for signing a centre-back, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger did just that in the January transfer window with the recruitment of Gabriel Paulista from Spanish club Villarreal.
