Top Five: Premier League volleys - starring Leeds and West Ham legends

Wayne Rooney

We take a look at the five best Premier League volleys, including strikes from Leeds, West Ham, Tottenham, Newcastle and Portsmouth legends

On this day in 2005, Wayne Rooney scored a majestic volley for Manchester United.

With the Red Devils one goal down to Newcastle, Rooney was screaming at referee Neale Barry, before deciding to shut up and rifle a dipping volley into the back if the net.

It was a goal for the generations, and is generally considered as one of the best ever strikes in Premier League history.

There is something about the volley that makes it a skill praised regardless of the finish, and there are so many times that can be executed.

Whether it is the powerful and dipping long-range strike of Rooney’s exquisite attempt, or the impeccably precise finish that Pajtim Kasami netted for Fulham last season, every single volley should be lauded for the skill and talent that it requires.

Rooney’s will go down in Premier League history, and to celebrate his incredible attempt the decade after it was struck, we take a look at five of the best volleys in Premier League history, including strikes from legends of West Ham, Leeds United and Newcastle United.
