Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson compared to Newcastle United's Remy Cabella

St James Park Four

How Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Newcastle United’s Remy Cabella compare…

Newcastle United host Swansea City at St James’ Park this weekend in an intriguing encounter which will pit two classy playmakers up against each other, Remy Cabella and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Cabella joined the Magpies last summer on a six-year deal after impressing heavily for former French champions Montpellier over the past five seasons.

Sigurdsson also moved clubs last summer, joining the Swans on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur after previously enjoying a successful loan spell in Wales.

The two have been tasked with leading their sides via creativity in the final third, but how have they done over the course of the campaign?

GoalsAssistsShots per GameKey Passes per GameTake-ons per GameAccurate Passes per GameBall Recoveries per GameAppearances
Gylfi Sigurdsson 5 9 2.07 2.32 0.93 30.82 3.86 28
Rémy Cabella 1 2 1.39 1.32 2.21 23.96 4.25 28

As per the table provide by Opta Stats, former Spurs ace Sigurdsson heads into the clash at Newcastle having experienced the better campaign to date, dominating Cabella in five of seven key areas.

The Icelandic international has found the net five times for Garry Monk’s side and has also contributed with a further nine assists – seven more than his upcoming rival.

French international Cabella has been a relative success on Tyneside despite his side’s struggles, averaging 2.21 successful dribbles and 4.25 ball recoveries per Premier League encounter.

However, Sigurdsson dominates the other categories and posts better averages in shots, key passes and accurate passes per fixture.

The 25-year-old has proven to be a vital player at the Liberty Stadium and if the Swans are to get all three points at Newcastle, the goals are likely to come via his creativity in the final third.
