Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has told Sky Sports that he expects Newcastle United to retain their Premier League status next season.
John Carver’s side are currently 14th in the league table with 35 points from 33 matches, just seven points above the relegation zone.
“33 points, maybe 34 will be enough to stay up this season and for that reason I can’t see Newcastle getting dragged in despite their terrible form,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports.
Could Matt Le Tissier’s prediction come true?
Newcastle are in terrible form at the moment and have lost their last six Premier League games. The Magpies are struggling for goals and are also conceding far too many than they should.
However, some of the teams below them in the league standings are actually worse than then. Burnley, Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City make up the bottom three, while Hull City, Sunderland and Aston Villa are directly above them.
While Newcastle cannot rely on results elsewhere going against them, they can take respite from the fact that QPR, Hull and Sunderland are all playing badly and struggling for form at the moment.
That does not mean that Carver and his players can take it easy. It is imperative that Newcastle return to winning ways against Swansea City at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday.
