Queens Park Rangers' Sandro v West Ham United's Alex Song: Who has been better this season?

Inside Loftus Road

How West Ham United’s Alex Song and Queens Park RangersSandro compare ahead of Saturday’s Premier League encounter between the two sides…

Queens Park Rangers host West Ham United this weekend in a match they have to win in order to preserve their Premier League status.

Goals have generally not been a problem for the Hoops at Loftus Road, therefore their fate may lie in how well they manage to keep the Hammers out at the other end.

Defensively, Chris Ramsey’s men will look to midfielder Sandro in order to offer the backline protection, but this weekend he is up against arguably one of the best midfield enforcers in the Premier League.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, former Arsenal star Alex Song has been a rock for Sam Allardyce’s men and based on this season clearly has the edge in this key midfield battle.

The Cameroon international spent plenty of years with the Gunners before trading the Emirates for Barcelona. His return with West Ham was a shock, and a real coup for the East Londoners.

So far this season, he has averaged 2.56 tackles, 7.37 defensive duel winners and 9.16 ball recoveries per encounter – results which far outshine QPR’s Sandro.

The Brazilian international also had a stint in North London though with Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham Hotspur, spending four years at White Hart Lane before moving to West London.

The former Spurs ace averages more interceptions and aerial duel winners than Song, but of the seven key categories they are the only two in which he comes out on top.

It’s set up to be an interesting clash between the two midfield generals, but if QPR are to win the midfield battle and claim the three points, then they will need Sandro to be at the very top of his game.
