Merson: Steve McClaren is the 'right man' for Newcastle - on one condition

Steve McClaren

The Sky Sports pundit has had his say on the Derby boss.

Paul Merson believes Derby County head coach Steve McClaren is the right man to take the Newcastle United job next season - but only if the Rams fail to achieve promotion, according to Sky Sports.

Merson feels the former England manager, currently in charge at Derby, is a 'solid' coach who has proven himself at Premier League level.

But he also says McClaren should stick with Derby if they achieve promotion from the Championship for that very reason.

The former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports: “I think Steve McClaren is the right man for the job but only if Derby don’t go up. He’s a solid manager and is proven at Premier League level.”

Meanwhile, Merson also gave his verdict on current boss John Carver - who is in charge at St James' Park until the summer.

He feels Carver should by no means stay in the job due to his poor record but does sympathise with the Newcastle coach. Indeed, Merson wants the Magpies to keep the 50-year-old on board beyond this season but in a different role.

The Sky Sports pundit explained: “I feel bad for John Carver, I think the players have let him down, but he hasn’t won enough games to stay in the job.

“I just hope the club keep him on their books somehow, it wouldn’t be right to just cut ties with him, too many clubs do that when good servants step up to help out."

Newcastle host Swansea City this weekend looking to and a torrid run of six straight Premier League defeats. Things don't look good for Carver's men considering their form, however...
